I have only had a full-time job for 2 years in my 20 year career -- I was in the IT department of a large non-profit. The week I learned I was pregnant with my son, I resigned, so that I would have 9 months to build up a freelance consulting business so that I could afford to work less when my son was born. Whether or not I was financially better off remains in question, but to me, the ability to control how often I was with my baby versus hiring additional help was non-negotiable to me. I want you to always have that choice and capacity to make money when a job isn’t desired or an option, as well.
But if you leave your job and go freelance without understanding a few certain basics about your financial life, you could do serious damage to and even jeopardize your financial security.
