Landline or Cell Phone for Your Home Business?

So you've started your own business, but you realize that to portray a professional business, you need a phone! So there are many options out there-land line, cell phone, VOiP, MagicJack and more! So the first option that most consider is a landline. It's easy & reliable, but not always inexpensive. In all honesty it really depends on the reception in your home, the number of calls you actually get on a daily basis, and the cost to add a secondary line.

Most folks already have a cell phone plan, and if you look into adding a line, you may find that you can do so for pretty cheap monthly! If you don't use many minutes on your cell phone, think about adding a line rather than getting a brand new contract. On my plan it was $20 to add an additional line for unlimited service on a shared plan. Much more reasonable than a home phone. I however, have HORRIBLE reception in my house and rather than a slew of dropped calls, I opted for a landline instead.

So I'm curious about how you have dealt with this dilemma and what your reason were for your choice?
Verizon Landline:
Based on experience, the cheapest wired option for just local calls (no long distance) would be about $20-30 per month. This is the Economy Message Rate Service. We’ve had this before, and even though it’s priced at $5.92 per month, the reality is with all the fees and per-call charges (not per minute though), we’ll get dinged for much more than advertised (as we were years ago).
With the landline, we pay 10 cents per incoming or outgoing call, and voicemail is extra, hence the $20+ estimate. And this doesn’t count any “Installation Fee” either.
Verizon Wireless Line:
Since we already have a 2nd line on our family share plan, I know how much we’ll be charged per month for a 3rd line: $15. That includes voicemail, a share of 1000 minutes, and no long-distance charges (which is standard for cellphones today). The downside is that I have to buy another phone, but we’ll see about that…

Summarized Comparison

So let’s see the main pros and cons of each option:
Home Phone Positives:

Separate line from personal home phone
No additional hardware to purchase (we have phones lying around)
Even cheapest option has tons of extra fees

Home Phone Negatives:

Cost (at least compared to the cellphone option as you’ll see)
Not mobile outside of the home
More difficult to transfer if we move

Cell Phone Positives:

Cost (compared to home phone)
Piggyback on existing family share plan while still keeping a separate line and billing for tax purposes
Mobile if needed
Only need to change address on account if we move

Cell Phone Negatives:

New hardware required
Expected to be available anytime, anywhere

Those are just the bigger ones that pop out at me, but I didn’t want to get too detailed in my analysis as some of them are just personal preferences. Feel free to comment with your own, or rebuttals to mine.

Our Final Decision (and more details)

You can probably see which way I was leaning. We chose to just add another cellphone line. Here are some more reasons and details:

Since we already have 2 LG cellphones (VX8500 and VX8700), I went for a third one: the LG VX5400. It uses the same charger as the other two, so we don’t need to buy another car charger. The phone is simple, yet stylish and lightweight, and the keys are very easy to find, which I can’t say for Stacie’s LG Chocolate (we hate that phone).
When I got the phone, I expected to pay $79.99 and get $50 back via a mail-in rebate to make the final cost $29.99 (plus tax). However, with the mysterious 20% employer discount that was applied in August, the salesperson told me I could get the phone for free on the spot! I really wanted to ask who I was employed with in their system, but I figured that would look fishy, so I just said “Sure!”. No rebate forms to complete and no money spent right there.
The salesperson tried to get me to pay a $25 “Activation Fee”, but I protested kindly and he made a note on the account and marked my receipt that it should be waived. I 100% expect to see a $25 fee on my next bill anyway, but now I have adequate proof that it should be waived. I’ll just have to go to the store in a month to get it reversed.
If we needed more minutes, the we could pay $10 more per month for another 400 minutes

So the end result was only an additional $15 per month for a “business line” for Stacie, with full mobility and voicemail, which are the basics that she needs for her new startup. She doesn’t plan on working out of an office for this job, but even if she was, we would have gone for the cellphone anyway.
So if you’re starting your own home-based business, think about getting a cellphone instead of a landline, especially if you can add it to an existing account for a much lower monthly cost. Granted, standalone cellphone plans can be quite costly, but you also get nationwide calling, voicemail, 3-way calling, and mobility. To get the same from a Verizon landline, you’ll need to pay $55.99 plus fees and taxes, which would total at least $70 per month. And you can’t take calls outside of the office.

Going Back To Work After A Year at Home

Was reading a great article about going back to work after baby. The article is geared to moms going back to work outside the home, but WAH moms deal with the same challenges after a long gap in employment, so I thought I'd share!

Question:

"I took the past year off to spend time with my baby. Now I'm ready to go back to work, but I don't know where to start. Plus, I'm worried that my résumé screams, 'She's been sitting on her butt for a year.' Help!"

Sitting on your butt when you have a baby around? Hardly! Still, I wouldn’t recommend filling in your résumé gap with “human milk-making machine” or “4 a.m. soother extraordinaire.” So how do you trade in your stay-at-home sweats for in-the-office suits?
First, figure out what kind of job you want. An interviewer will sense it if your heart’s not in it, so take the time to think about whether you’d like to return to your former field or try something new (hey, you’re doing so well at motherhood, and you were once a novice at that!). Then follow these steps to get that dream offer.

Consider your old company. If you liked your previous job, get in touch with your former boss. Going back to work where you’ve already been employed may help smooth the transition from home to office. Plus, it’s a lot easier for a company to hire someone they know, especially if you did great work before-baby, than start from scratch with a brand-new employee.
Set up childcare. If you’re serious about going back to work, set aside regular time to focus on your job search — and that doesn’t mean plopping your pipsqueak in front of the TV every day. Ask a family member or find a babysitter to watch your wee one a few times a week while you scour online job boards, make phone calls to prospective employers, and send in applications. At the very least, work on job apps while your sweetie’s snoozing and have a sitter at the ready in case you get called in for an interview on short notice. Be sure to consider all of your childcare options before going back to work.
Update your résumé. The best way to handle your year at home on your résumé is to… (drumroll, please) not mention it. So many people are out of work these days that having a gap in employment is no longer a huge red flag. But if you’re concerned that gap is keeping you from getting hired, consider volunteering or consulting in your field while looking for work. Then, use those experiences to fill in the blanks on your résumé.
Make connections. The chance of your résumé (or anyone’s, really) getting randomly plucked out of the pile is pretty slim. But a friend, or a friend of a friend, or even the mom you met in infant massage class can launch you onward and upward simply by putting in a good word. That’s why you shouldn’t be shy about asking someone to recommend you. Networking will also help you hear about job opportunities before they get publicly posted. So invite your former coworkers to lunch, join professional organizations, and create a profile on linkedin.com, a business networking site. And if you know someone (or know someone who knows someone) at a company you’d like to work for, ask if you can pick her brain over coffee.
Nail the interview. So you finally score an interview for your dream job, and the recruiter’s first question puts you on the spot about the gap in your résumé. Be prepared with a concise, honest, and confident answer, something like: “I decided to stay home with my baby for her first year, and I’m glad I did it, but now I’m eager to get back to work.” Then, steer the conversation back to your qualifications and experience.

Remember, any employer who holds the (baby) gap against you is probably not a mom-friendly manager anyway. How will she handle it when you must leave work early because your small-fry spikes a fever at his group daycare? So move on from the less-supportive companies and believe that the right job will come along (because it will).

Time Saving Meals?

Everyone thinks that working from home= having TONS of time for fabulous home cooked meals. I think the load that many of us take on to work from home as well as mantain a family & houshold can at times be called nothing short of INSANE! So, as busy as I am, I like to do meals that are short on time, but full on flavor. Time spared in the kitchen gives me the time to do the million other little things on my to do list. I like to use the crock pot! Family gets a homecooked meal and it basically cooks itself while I get things done! I've even gone as far as preparing "dump meals" when I throw all the ingredients in a ziplock bag & freeze it, and when the day comes to prepare it, I just dump the entire frozen bag in the crock pot in the morning and it is perfect by dinnertime! I'm always on the lookout for great crockpot recipes and time saving meal ideas. I used to use a great website 50plusfriends to pull some fantastic crock pot recipes for every kind of main dish imaginable, but I can no longer access them. So I'm back on the recipe hunt. Do you have any suggestions?
